Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Renewal

ACLS Course information

ACLS stands for Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support. It is a specialized training program developed by the American Heart Association (AHA) to equip healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills needed to manage and respond to life-threatening cardiovascular emergencies. You will learn to assess, recognize and provide high-quality care to adult patients experiencing life-threatening medical emergencies, including shock, cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and respiratory emergencies.

Objectives of ACLS course

  1. Recognizing and managing cardiac arrest: Participants learn how to recognize the signs of cardiac arrest, initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to deliver defibrillation when appropriate.
  2. Identifying and treating life-threatening arrhythmias: ACLS covers the recognition and management of various cardiac arrhythmias, including ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, pulseless electrical activity, and asystole.
  3. Proper use of medications: Participants learn about different medications used in cardiac emergencies and their appropriate dosages and administration routes.
  4. Team dynamics and communication: ACLS emphasizes effective communication and teamwork in high-stress situations, as these are critical factors in managing cardiac emergencies successfully.
  5. Post-cardiac arrest care: The course also covers the immediate care and management of patients who have been resuscitated after cardiac arrest.

Pre-requisites

  • Providers who take the ACLS Course must be proficient in the following:
    • Performing high-quality BLS skills according to the current AHA      Guidelines for CPR and ECC
    • Reading and interpreting electrocardiograms (ECGs)
    • Understanding ACLS pharmacology
    • Providing bag-mask ventilation



  1.  Review the information in the 2020 ACLS Course Provider Manual prior to the course.
  2. Complete and bring in the Pre-course assessment and pre-course work. https://elearning.heart.org/course/423
  3. Pre-course Self-Assessment & Pre-course Work Is MANDATORY and must complete the Precourse Self-Assessment and achieve a score of at least 70% before taking the ACLS Course
  4. The student must email or print their completion certificate and bring it to class
  5. The ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) Precourse work typically includes studying course materials and completing assessments before attending the in-person or online ACLS course. The precourse work aims to prepare participants for the training and ensure that they have the necessary knowledge and skills to benefit fully from the ACLS class.

After successfully completing an ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) class, participants are awarded a certification provider eCArd card.
